Headaches

Headaches are everywhere - virtually everyone will experience a headache in their lifetime for various reasons. When headaches are experienced frequently and chronically, it can have a significant impact on your ability to function and on your emotional health. They can be as common and as difficult to treat as the common cold.

 

Headaches can be caused by many things, mainly: tension, stress, anxiety; eye strain; fatigue; dehydration; food or environmental allergy; sinusitis; TMJ syndrome; nutrient deficiencies; exposure to irritants; consumption of coffee, alcohol, cigarettes or drugs; and hormone flux. They can also be a sign of an underlying health problem that needs to be addressed (fever, arthritis, aneurysm, hypertension).

 

There are different types of headaches, including tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches.

 

The majority of all headaches are tension-type headaches are caused by muscle tension, usually of the muscles in the upper back, shoulders and neck.

 

Migraine-type headaches are caused by an instability of the blood vessels and circulation to the head.

 

Cluster headaches are recurring, and are known to be severe and debilitating.

 

Certain types of headaches are associated with a reaction to food additives such as MSG, sulfites, nitrites, citric acid or foods such as wheat, chocolate, sugar, dairy products, nuts.
